The Taurus Tale

Dark Lore · 2026-08-26
In the forsaken depths of the Aegean, where the moon dipped into the horizon like a ghostly galleon, Jupiter stirred, his massive form coiled in darkness. From the heart of Mount Ida, he emerged as a bull, his hide as black as the night that shrouded the world. The winds whispered secrets to him, and Europa's presence stirred his ancient hunger. The Phoenician king, Agenor, beheld his daughter's beauty with newfound reverence, and with it, his trepidation. He had long feared Jupiter's wrath, for in his heart, he knew that the god of the skies was a creature both fierce and capricious. As he watched Europa approach him on the bull's back, her eyes shone like stars in the darkness, filled with an unspoken longing. The moment she touched his hide, Jupiter felt the rush of power course through him, and with it, the weight of her terror. She seemed to tremble at every wave that crashed against the shore, as if the very ocean itself was warning her of the dangers that lay ahead. Her companions, a tribe of warriors, gathered around her, their faces illuminated by the faint glow of torches. But Jupiter's mind was elsewhere, his thoughts consumed by the memory of Europa's mother, Cadmus, who had died in childbirth. The old king's grief had driven him to madness, and now he was driven by a hunger for revenge against the bull that had taken his child. With an unseen force, he guided her through the waves, drawing her deeper into the darkness. As they reached the shores of Crete, Europa's eyes locked onto the sea itself, as if she saw something there that only she could comprehend. Her companions followed her gaze, and for a moment, they beheld the terror in their own hearts. The sea seemed to writhe and twist around them, its depths filled with unseen horrors. And then, it was gone. Europa stood alone on the shore, her eyes fixed upon some point beyond the waves. Agenor's voice echoed through the night, calling out for his daughter, but Jupiter's response was a low rumble that shook the earth. The bull vanished into the darkness, leaving behind only the faint whisper of Europa's name. The moon dipped below the horizon, and in its place, a new star rose, casting an eerie glow over the landscape. Cadmus, now the unwitting founder of Thebes, stood alone on the shore, his heart heavy with the weight of his failure. The city he had sought to build would be a monument to his mother's memory, a testament to the terror that lurked beneath the surface of the world. As the darkness deepened, the wind began to howl, and the trees creaked in protest. Jupiter's presence still lingered, a malevolent force that haunted the shadows. The bull was gone, but its spirit remained, waiting for the next victim to cross his path. And when the moon rose again, the darkness would stir once more, and Europa's call would echo through the ages, beckoning those who dared to listen.

After "A Birthday" (Christina Rossetti)

Poem · 2026-08-26
My mind is like a midnight sea Where stars are scattered, wild and free; My mind is like a rose in summer's rain Whose petals unfurl with gentle ease; My mind is like a morning's dewy light That shines on all that I pursue tonight; It's sweeter than the whispers of my past Because love has come to me at last; I'll weave it in threads of silver and gold In silken loops, where stories unfold; It will be set in moonbeams, stars above And in the language of a gentle love.
